What is asbestos?Asbestos is a term for a naturally occurring fibrous silicate mineral, mined in Australia until late 1984. It contains strong fibres that have excellent flexibility, durability, fire resistance and insulating properties.
How do I know if it is asbestos? The only way to determine whether or not a product contains asbestos, is to have a sample tested in a laboratory. MPA Services can arrange to have a professional asbestos supervisor come to your home and collect a sample for testing. Whilst he is there, he can measure up the area in order to provide a quote if removal is required.
How long before sample results are received?Sample analysis results are generally received within 24 to 48 hours of the sample being collected. If a sample requires an urgent result, this can be arranged at no additional charge.
Where can I find asbestos in my home? Some of the areas you may find asbestos in your home include:
Where is asbestos used in general building?Approximately one third of all homes built in Australia contain asbestos products. As a general rule, if your house was built before the mid-1980s, it is highly likely it would contain asbestos containing materials. If your house was built in South Australia after 1990, it is unlikely that it would have asbestos containing materials. Asbestos use in Australia was outlawed only in 2003.
